Free Web Hosting Vs. Paid Web Hosting

When setting up a site there are two main host servers to choose from – paid site hosting and free web site hosting. Determining which one you will need is an important decision and should be though over carefully. Of course there are many different pros and cons to each (depending on what type of site you are starting) and we have just the information to help you out.

Understanding Server Load

Server Load is a number and is usually in an x.xx format with values starting from 0.00. The number expresses how may processes are waiting in the queue to access the processor(s). This is calculated for a certain period of time and the smaller the number, the better. A high number is often associated with a decrease in the performance of the server. You can usually find the server load value in the control panel associated with your web hosting account under “Server Status”.

Dedicated Server vs VPS (Virtual Private Server)

At nearly all webhosting companies websites now a days, you will see the two terms “Virtual Hosting” (VPS) and “Dedicated Hosting”. What is the difference between these? Well its fairly simple.

On a Virtual Private Server you have your website placed on a computer (The webserver), that has other websites on it - anywhere up to 350 or more. This has a number of down sides, such as being slower, less secure, as well as giving you less access to edit things on the server, such as installing & updating the system software. One the plus side however, it is much cheaper then going for a dedicated server, as well as being easier to administer.
